August 2025 Nuggets - various and sundry important things to know
Please remember that the tax payment deadline for post-Helene is 9/25/25 for NC taxpayers. Federal penalties and interest have been waived until that date. NC penalties have been waived. As of this writing, NC interest waiver has not been passed by the legislature.
If you haven’t yet sent me your tax information for your 2024 tax returns, please do so at your earliest convenience. The extended business deadline is 9/25/25 and the extended individual deadline is 10/15/25.
A reminder that, as of this date, I have seen nothing repealing the executive order to make all payments online (bank draft or credit card) for all Federal payments due. Per the executive order, the IRS should no longer write, nor accept, paper checks as of 9/30/25.
According to IRS Commissioner Billy Long, the 2026 tax season (preparing 2025 returns) is expected to open after President’s Day, on February 17, 2026. In comparison, the normal opening is the last Monday in January, so a 3-week delay. Of course, a lot could happen in 6 months, so we’ll see, but I believe this is a portent of things to come next year. Bear with me. We’ll get through it.
Sub-nugget of the day: Billy Long is an auctioneer from Missouri who has no background in tax whatsoever. He seems like a nice, down-to-earth guy that is more interested in turning the IRS into a human-led organization with a conscience (people helping people) rather than a government machine, but we’ll see what happens. Edit to the sub-nugget: On August 8th, President Trump moved Long to be US Ambassador to Iceland so he served less than 2 months. Again, we’ll see what happens, but there have been 7 commissioners/acting commissioners so far in 2025. This doesn’t look promising.
