Thoughts for Employers

We’re getting to that time of year when, as employers, you need to do a couple of things.

  • Make sure you have the latest Department of Labor Law Posters available. These are supposed to be posted in a place where any employee can see/read them. By a timeclock. By the employee entrance to the building. It’s just supposed to be displayed somewhere that’s conspicuous to employees. I’m getting all kinds of emails about it. You probably are, too.

  • Be on the lookout for letters telling you of unemployment rate changes.

    • In NC, it comes from the NCDES (Department of Employment Security)

    • In SC, it comes from the SCDEW (Department of Employment and Workforce)

    • These letters usually say something to the effect of you’ve paid this much, your account balance is this much, based on our calculations, your new rate beginning 1/1/202x is X%.

    • Whoever is providing your payroll needs to be aware of these changes. I can help you change it in your payroll software if I have access. Payroll software will have a place where you can upload it to the software provider and they should be able to change it. There’s a few ways to get it done, but it does need to be done.

It’s important to note that labor law posters can change throughout the year with new laws. Unemployment rates can be changed at any time during the year, depending on what may be going on in your company or industry. It’s just more likely that you’ll get changes toward the end of the year so I wanted to put that on your radar.
